Second Grade learns about The Gambia!
Ibrahim's mom, Aminata, recently joined both 2nd grade classes to teach about The Gambia. Using zoom, she connected Haggerty 2nd graders with a 2nd grade classroom in The Gambia. We asked questions and shared information with our peers who are almost 4,000 miles away. Aminata and Ibrahim also shared many artifacts made in The Gambia from recycled materials. Everyone chose a handmade Gambian sun hat that will remind us of the many things we learned about this country. Thank you Aminata!
Math Corner! By Nili Pearlmutter
Cambridge Math Circle
Mondays | 3:30-4:30PM | Zoom
Calling all 3rd, 4th and 5th graders who love to solve puzzles and problems! Cambridge Math Circle was founded in 2018 to “give students a chance to experience deep, fascinating math and meet others who like solving puzzles and stretching their minds.” They have a few spots for Haggerty students in their next free session. If your child is interested in participating, reach out to me, Nili Pearlmutter or to Nataliya Yufa.
You can learn more about Cambridge Math Circle. More details >>
Math Puzzles in the Library!
Ask your child about the math puzzles in the library. Each month two new puzzles are put up. These puzzles have equations with pictures in place of some of the numbers. Students figure out the value of the question mark. At the March assembly, 4th grader Dyna taught the school how to solve them. Here's a link to that video. Watch video >>
Solving problems like this builds number sense, promotes problem solving, and prepares students for algebra. Thirty students correctly solved one or both March puzzles and forty-five solved the April puzzles!
This is one of the March puzzles. Try to figure it out with your child!
Second Graders Visit Wheelock Family Theatre!
The 2nd graders traveled to the Wheelock Family Theatre for a live performance of The Wizard of Oz. They loved being in a theater again! Thank you to Friends of Haggerty for funding our trip.
More News From Second Grade - A Retirement!
One of our second grade teachers, Carolyn Callender, will retire at the end of this school year. Ms. Callender has been teaching for 32 years! It's hard to say goodbye to Ms. Callender, but we wish her lots of adventures and joy in retirement!

April is nationally recognized as Poetry Month. Many of our classrooms are currently reading poetry, reciting poetry and writing original poetry. Poetry is a creative writing genre that welcomes all students to use their imaginations and to share their feelings and emotions about the world around them. Children are writing poems about many topics: nature, friends, families, colors, their identities and animals. Our teachers read poetry from around the world. Every culture has rich poetry to share and celebrate with our students.
Many students are also planning to enter the Annual Cambridge Public Library Contest. If you’d like to listen or read poems at home, check out this site to listen to poem together: Children's Poetry Archive.

Our First grade families are invited to school next week on Thursday, May 5th for a Poetry Share in the garden. Our Grade 1 Team will be in touch with families with the classroom details.
Here are some original poems from Haggerty students.
My Butterfly
by Aubrey W. Grade 1
I love my butterfly,
it’s like a
soft flower.
I love my butterfly.
It flies super fast.
I love
my butterfly.
Yay!
I Like Flowers
by Nyari W. Grade 1
I love you flowers.
You are the best.
My flowers,
I am happy with flowers.
I Love You
by Allison L. Grade 1
I love you like a cherry loves a tree.
And the paint loves the canvas
And like you love me!
A Fairy
by Auggie Grade 1
A Fairy on a leaf is so perfect and divine.
But a fairy on a leaf is not yours or mine.
Color Poem
By Saina Grade 1
Teal is an early night sky,
And an eye color,
And the feeling of winter.
Teal is the taste of sea salt
and the smell of an ocean.
Teal makes me feel happy.
It is the sound of rushing waves.
Teak is beautiful and sweet.
Teal is one of my favorite colors.
Race Matters: Courageous Conversations
Please join a monthly affinity group for VLUS Triad White Caregivers Working Toward Anti-Racism.
The affinity group will read and discuss various texts throughout the year in order to address our own unconscious biases and to take an active role in fighting white supremacy in our schools, communities, and ourselves. There will be reading to complete before each session, and families are strongly encouraged to make a commitment to attend as many sessions as possible.
Next Meeting: Thursday May 5th, 6:45-8PM
How can we can begin to transform biased, white supremacist standards of professionalism?
Reading: The Bias of Professional Standards. Read here >>

Friends of Haggerty (FOH)
Thank you for donating books
Thank you for making the Porter Square Books fundraiser a great success! Haggerty families and friends purchased 99 books requested by our school’s teachers. The teachers are grateful for your contributions and soon the kids will be, too! In addition, Porter Square Books donated a percentage of all your purchases to Friends of Haggerty, which resulted in $175 for our enrichment programs.
Join FOH
We’re always looking for new members to join Friends of Haggerty, but especially now that we are planning ahead for next year. Everyone is welcome, and your participation is a small commitment that makes a big difference for enrichment programs for Haggerty students. If you’d like more information or to attend a meeting to see what it’s like, contact Suzanne or Lissa.
