Message from Christen Sohn

Good afternoon CSUS Parents and Caregivers,

Springtime weather and events are in full swing at CSUS! In addition to the standard end-of-school-year programming, we’re excited to share two new initiatives we have added to the Cambridge Street experience for our 8th graders. Based on feedback from scholars, CSUS piloted our first ever Cobra Success Academy last week. Cobra Success Academy was an opportunity for struggling 8th grade scholars to catch up on classwork and connect 1:1 with teachers, counselors, after school staff, and CRLS administration and make a plan to end 8th grade strong and more prepared for high school. CSA participants reported a positive, supportive experience, and we are proud of scholars’ hard work!

CSUS will also be collaborating with the Office of Equity Inclusion and Belonging (OEIB) to provide eighth grade scholars with an opportunity to discuss topics surrounding race, gender and sexual orientation. Beginning on May 23rd, these conversations/activities will be facilitated by members of the OEIB, CRLS' Black Student Union, Students of Color Coalition, Pan Asian Club, P10, LatinX Club, members of the Title IX Auriela Advocates as well as other white CRLS students working towards anti bias/anti racism, and CSUS' Cultural Proficiency Facilitators. Scholars will share their thoughts and feelings in self-selected affinity groups. Our hope is that by exploring these topics, scholars will increase their empathy for each other and the CSUS community as a whole. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Robinson at [email protected].

Cambridge Street scholars and staff continue to make innovative, equity-driven experiences a focus of our community’s work. We are looking forward to broadening the success of these programs with offerings for our 6th and 7th graders in the future.

Our Spring in the Arts concert is less than two weeks away and we are fired up for a good time! If your child is participating in the Visual Art Show or the Evening Performance please have your child follow up with the VPA Program Director for information about uniform, call time, dress rehearsal, etc. Note, per CPSD guidelines all audience members are required to wear a face mask and show proof of vaccination for entry. “Grab and go” meals will be available for families to take outdoors to eat or to bring home. Thank you for your support and feel free to reach out to CSUS Administration for more info on audience guidelines.

COVID Updates
Our school community had 17 positive COVID cases identified either through outside testing or school-based pool testing over last week from 5/12-5/16. Families at the impacted grade level will receive a separate communication from CSUS. See here for the Superintendent’s most recent communication regarding masking.

If you are interested in receiving weekly at-home rapid tests for your scholar, opt-in through the CPS Family Portal or by contacting Ms. Howard at [email protected]. Rapid tests should be administered Friday mornings before school. Positive results should be reported to the Main Office.

Middle School Health Survey

Every two years all middle schoolers across the district take this very important survey.

  • The survey is completely anonymous.
  • It gives us information on how students are feeling about themselves and the school.
  • We use this information to figure out how we can make ourselves a better school and what supports students need. It also tells us what we are doing well, which is always good to hear.
  • We don’t get the information back until the fall. When we have it, we will definitely share the results with you and let you know what we plan to do about it!
