Message from Christen Sohn

Good afternoon CSUS Parents and Caregivers,

There are really no words to express how moving it was to enjoy our scholars sharing their artistic talents live, in person, with our community for last week’s Spring into the Arts showcase. Last Thursday marked the first time our entire school has gathered in the auditorium since early 2020. It was the first time many of our caregivers were able to enter the 840 Cambridge Street building. There have been countless rules and safety restrictions limiting the ways our scholars can access the arts in the past two years - it was truly joyful to see their talent and passion on display, and to share it with all of you!

Many, many thanks to the folks who made it possible - Ms Chanler, Ms Silbert, Ms Carmichael, Ms Buchholz, Mr Baeza, Ms Nelson and Mr Watts, thank you for your commitment to our scholars and their pursuits of music, song, dance, poetry and visual art. Our scholars and their families were so grateful and so proud. We came out of the pandemic with the district's only Symphony Orchestra, bilingual poetry, serious dance moves, and a chorus that brought members of the audience to tears! 840 Cambridge Street served as gallery to walls upon walls (and windows, and tables) of art on display, including a table of clay and felt that looked good enough to eat. Once again our staff and scholars have demonstrated that CSUS Spells SUCCESS!

Today, May 31st is the last day for CSUS after school programming. CSUS staff appreciates scholar enthusiasm and excitement for our after school clubs and activities and look forward to hanging out again next school year!

COVID Updates:

Our school community had 4 positive COVID cases identified through outside testing over last week from 5/25-5/31. Our weekly pool testing has been delayed due to the Monday holiday. Positives from today’s testing will be shared in next week’s Tuesday Take Home. Any families at the impacted grade level would receive a separate communication from CSUS. See here for the Superintendent’s most recent communication regarding masking.

If you are interested in receiving weekly at-home rapid tests for your scholar, opt-in through the CPS Family Portal or by contacting Ms. Howard. Rapid tests should be administered Friday mornings before school. Positive results should be reported to the Main Office.

CSUS Assistant Principal Search

Dear Cambridge Street Upper School Faculty, Staff, and Parents,

I am writing to share news with the Cambridge Street Upper School community on the upcoming search for the next Assistant Principal of CSUS.

We are grateful to Ms. Tiffany Robinson for stepping up to lead CSUS as Interim Assistant Principal. The commitment of both Ms. Sohn and Ms. Robinson to the students, families, and educators has been felt by many. They both have used their skill and expertise to support the CSUS school community through great transition.

Choosing an Assistant Principal is one of the most critical decisions we make as a school community. We are committed to having an inclusive search and selection process that is reflective of your school community’s voices. In embarking on the search for the next Assistant Principal of CSUS, the first opportunity for engagement in this process is to respond to the Assistant Principal search survey. We want to encourage everyone to share your thoughts and feedback on the professional and personal attributes of what you would like to see in the next Assistant Principal and if you would like to assist us further with our search please indicate so on the survey here

Middle School Health Survey

Every two years all middle schoolers across the district take this very important survey.

  • The survey is completely anonymous.
  • It gives us information on how students are feeling about themselves and the school.
  • We use this information to figure out how we can make ourselves a better school and what supports students need. It also tells us what we are doing well, which is always good to hear.
  • We don’t get the information back until the fall. When we have it, we will definitely share the results with you and let you know what we plan to do about it!
