Message from Principal Julie Craven
Dear RAUC Families,

Earlier this year I shared that staff is reading a book together as part of our year’s focus: to work with deepened cohesion to support academic excellence and social justice for all students. (How to Create a Culture of Achievement in your school and classroom, by Fisher, Frey, and Pumpian.) For each chapter, staff engage in a 3 week cycle of reflective practice: read the chapter in week 1; discuss and choose something to try in week 2; reflect on the impact of the experimentation in week 3.

Chapter 2, Welcome, asks a central question: “If (people) do not feel welcome, how can we expect them to participate, engage, and achieve?” Much staff of what staff tried was classroom based, but families may also have experienced some--a positive note or phone call home; a staff member reaching out to initiate a conversation. This year’s learning will help us identify practices to commit to schoolwide next year.

I wanted to share what moved me as I read staff written reflections: staff willingness to stretch their practice; their deep commitment to making students and families feel welcome; their honesty that this is an area where we all can and should grow. They renewed my gratitude for being part of such a caring community of educators.

I invite you to our Coffee with Head of School this Wednesday, November 9 from 9 - 10AM to share ways you have felt welcomed at RAUC as well as ideas for improvement. We meet in the RAUC conference room.

Best,

Julie Craven

Homework

Your Middle Schooler and Homework: FRAUC Speaker Topic
Wednesday, November 9 | 6 - 7PM
Do you wish that your conversations with your middle schooler were less about “that one math problem” and more about lifelong skills for being productive with homework? This workshop will cover some basic theories about how we form habits, how study skills and homework habits can be built into an everyday routine, and the kind of support that young people need to build productive academic habits over time. Presenter: Annie Leavitt, CPS Middle School Network Coordinator, 6 - 7PM in RAUC library before the FRAUC meeting.

Winter

Brrrrrr...Students should dress for the weather!
We prioritize outdoor recess. Space and fresh air are good for growing young people! Please help ensure your student is dressed for the season. If they decide to choose fashion over function, they may be in for a chilly recess! (Please note that we do make sweatshirts and unclaimed jackets from the Lost and Found available for students who are underdressed, although students are not always willing to take this option.)

Veterans Day

Veteran’s Day Assembly Wednesday, November 9
All Peabody and Rindge Avenue students will gather together in the auditorium to reflect on the significance of this holiday honoring veterans past and present. Students from the Rindge Ave Chorus, Jazz Band, members of the Orchestra, and Peabody Early Bird Singers will be performing at the assembly-- over 130 students in total! Ask your student when they get home what stood out for them.

DC

8th Grade DC Trip Deadlines
A community trip includes everyone! December 16th is the deadline to register and make a $200 deposit with Capitol Tours. We are moved by how people are working together to ensure that all students are able to attend. Families are making payments as they can, as well as donating time, goods, and scholarship contributions as they are able. Information has been sent home about scholarships. Please send a request in a sealed envelope to Head of School Julie Craven by December 16. Please reach out to Jason Everhart (8th grade Social Studies) or Julie Craven (617.349.4060) with any questions.

Tax-deductible donations can be made online (there is a general Donation link; you can reach out to the FRAUC presidents if you would like to target your donation to DC scholarships: Kim Kaufman or Yih-hsien Shen). Reach out to DC point person Patty Nash if you would like to support fundraising for the trip.
