Teachers Learning Together
The staff continues to engage in weekly meetings to support our focus on deepened cohesion to support academic excellence and social justice for all students. Over the last few weeks, teachers read Chapter 3, Do No Harm in the book, How to Create a Culture of Achievement in your school and classroom (Fisher and Frey). The chapter asks teachers and schools to consider how “…to increase the positive behavioral profile of the school in order for teachers and students to do what they do best: learn together.”
Several ideas from the chapter resonated deeply with staff during team discussions. “Rules don’t teach students how to behave – people do” made us think about how we can continue to teach and scaffold behavioral expectations so that ALL students feel successful. Teachers were further inspired by several ideas promoted in the chapter including student self-reflection, restorative practices, and embedding circle conversations throughout classes.
Core Values: December focus on
“We Reflect”
Our goals for December are for students to get better at identifying opportunities where reflecting would help them and to develop strategies for reflecting effectively. Common lessons in advisories gave students guiding questions when reflecting on a decision: Will my body thank me or immediately hate me for this decision? What are the short and long term consequences? Is this decision in line with who I want to be? Teachers are also exploring opportunities to reflect in the classroom. Finally, the Do No Harm chapter in our common book had a question to prompt reflecting that teachers have begun asking students and themselves: “What is the next right thing?” This week we will launch a Reflecting Wall next to the office where students and staff can record examples of when reflecting helped them. If you are at the school, please check it out--and add your own examples!
