RAUC
We R.A.U.C! We Reflect, Aim high, seek Unity, and have Compassion!

March 1, 2017
Greetings from Principal Julie Craven

Dear RAUC Families,

We were delighted to welcome students back to school after a well-earned February break. We hope everyone found time to rest and laugh. We are certainly ready to get back into the swing of learning! Highlights featured in this newsletter include spring learning partners conferences and 7th grade NetPals events.

I also want to clearly state that our school, city, and state welcome all students. In response to the recent policy changes by the federal government regarding protections for transgender students, Superintendent Kenneth Salim issued a clear statement to all families. “Bigotry and intolerance have no place within Cambridge Public Schools’ educational environment and workplace. I want to state unequivocally to all Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Questioning (LGBTQ+) students, staff, and collaborating partners: you are valued members of our community.” The superintendent’s full message can be found on the CPS website.

Mitchell Chester, MA Commissioner of Education, sent out his own message that included his statement, “I would like to affirm for you that Massachusetts remains dedicated to protecting the rights of transgender students even in light of recent federal actions. No one should be discriminated against based on their gender identity, and under existing state statute and regulations, protections for students and families will remain in place in the Commonwealth.” The state offers this resource site: http://bit.ly/masafeschools

We will continue to actively support our RAUC core values of unity and compassion.

Respectfully,

Julie Craven

7TH GRADE NETPALS IS IN FULL SWING!
The RAUC NetPals program is an ongoing mentoring and professional awareness program that has our seventh graders in touch with adult professionals from several local STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) companies: Vecna, Grace Consumer Products, Cambridge Systematics, and Oracle. Students are already paired with professional partners and have been exchanging communications. On Wednesday, March 8, students and mentors will enjoy a light breakfast together in our cafeteria and then proceed to the auditorium where the professionals will speak about how their work reflects the whole notion of STEAM education. The culminating event will be a Science Expo where students will present their work to the NetPals when they visit the school on Wednesday, April 26. Special thanks to 7th grade science teacher Jay Mahoney for all his work making this partnership happen!
