Greetings from Julie Craven

Dear RAUC Families,

We hope your student came home Friday with positive stories about our whole school community meeting. We continue to align school structures with our new core values. The community meeting supported unity in a number of ways. Students sat in mixed-grade color squads to build cross-grade connections, with a 6th, 7th, and 8th grade advisory in each squad. We hope to do more with our color squads throughout the year--see if your student can remember what color they are. Additionally, students from each grade shared I am from poems written in advisory during the week. It was moving both to see the range of students who stood tall to speak their stories to an assembly of their peers and to hear the warm applause each received. We also had fun together with a staff song and a Welcome to RAUC video that featured a mannequin challenge from each advisory! Ask your student to name their favorite part of the community meeting.

This week marks the start of a regular schedule. We hope the Learning Previews help you have conversations about school with your student that go beyond the shrugs or “nothing much” responses middle schoolers often give to probes about their day!

Powerful earthquakes and hurricanes have dominated the news. Our hearts are with those in the path of these natural disasters. For those with loved ones in affected areas, we hope they are safe. Please let the school know if we can be of support in any way.

Peace,
Julie Craven, Head of School

Introduction to Middle School for
6th Graders

All 6th grade students take a Introduction to Middle Schools course (IMS). This course helps our sixth grade students make their transition into middle school and also equips them with tools and resources that will support their academic and social growth experiences. The course meets three times a week for five weeks. It is taught by Ms. Samantha Musher (school librarian/instructional technology specialist) and Ms. Shanika Boadu (guidance counselor). World language class replaces IMS starting October 10.

Below is a brief overview of the different topics covered in Intro to Middle School. If you have any questions or concerns or want to know more about the curriculum, please feel free to reach out to either Ms. Musher or Ms. Boadu.

Unit 1 - Orientation and Welcome Week
Unit 2 - Preparing to Use Technology
Unit 3 - Student Skills
Unit 4 - Taking Care of Our Community
Unit 5 - Student/Teacher Communication and Wrap-Up

RAUC School Council
Please consider joining the School Council to bring a parent/guardian voice to school decisions. School Council meets the second Wednesday of the month 7:30 - 8:15AM. Three parent/guardian representatives and three faculty representatives meet to provide guidance for decisions such as School Improvement Plan and Family Engagement Plan. Please contact Julie Craven if you are interested or call the school (617.349.4060). We need at least one new member to replace an 8th grade parent from last year. All are welcome at our first meeting this Wednesday in the RAUC conference room.

Everyone belongs at our school
With the future uncertain for students formerly protected by DACA, a reminder that state and federal law require state educational agencies and local school districts to provide all elementary and secondary students with equal access to public education — irrespective of race, color, sex, gender identity, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, disability, or immigration status. Please reach out to the school if you have questions or need support.

Peabody Market

Peabody Community Market
Wednesday, September 20th is the year’s first Community Market. Markets will continue the third Thursday of each month. This market has fresh fruits and vegetables, grains, cereals, eggs, milk, meat and so much more! The fruits and vegetables are fresh (and often local) and there will be a diverse offering of other staples for your pantry. All the food is donated by Food For Free and is therefore free for those who attend the market. Please stop by and check it out and bring your own bags! Contact Ellen van Bever if you can volunteer to set up, work the market, or clean up.
