Unity Art Project

Last period Friday, students in advisory traced their hands, then decorated them to express their individuality. It was part of an art project with the following purposes: to creatively represent our belief that everyone belongs here through a collective art project; to build unity by spending an hour all doing the same project! All those uniquely decorated hands were then connected into a visual display of unity. Check out the bulletin board at the top of the stairs to see the result!

French Students Dive into
Black History Month

RAUC 6th grade French students created a bulletin board to celebrate black history & African history month. We learned about resistance movements in the Caribbean & West Africa and watched the movie, “African Doctor,” which tells about the time period just after the soleils des independences, or independence wars of the 1960s in the Caribbean & west Africa. In 7th grade French we are also studying the connection between resistance movements and cafe culture! Students have enjoyed learning about not only how cafes created a safe place for resistant thought to be discussed, but also tasting traditional cafe & bakery food like macarons & baguettes & French rolls. Thanks to Trader Joe’s in Alewife & Iggy’s bakery for supporting our learning with all our senses!

6th Grade Math Celebration
In 6th grade math, students recently completed a project in which they created the catalog of their dreams. They applied the math practice standard of making sense of problems and interpreting the impact of sale prices, tax, and shipping fees. They took time at the end of the project to give each other thoughtful feedback on math accuracy as well as catalog design. Not only is this kind of feedback a way for students to get immediate kudos for their work, it is also an opportunity for students to learn from each other and raise their collective standards for quality.

Looking to Support the School?
Please Consider this Role

Families of Rindge Avenue Upper Campus (FRAUC) is seeking a Raspberry Card Coordinator for the next school year. The current coordinator, Lynn Betlock, is stepping down now after three years and FRAUC is seeking a replacement in order to keep this important program alive. The Raspberry Card program, a collaborative effort with Baldwin and Peabody, raises funds by selling $10 cards that offer discounts to approximately 16 local businesses. Proceeds to FRAUC in the last couple of years has ranged from about $1,800 to $2,400. (Find out more about the card here.)

The FRAUC coordinator works with other parents from Baldwin and Peabody to sign up and renew businesses, get funding for printing from a local bank, and order the cards. The coordinator also oversees selling the cards at RAUC and in the community and distributes cards to other parents willing to sell them. The responsibilities will be mostly this spring, as plans are made for the upcoming card, and next September through mid-December, the peak selling time.

To find out more about this role, please email eighth-grade parent Lynn Betlock at [email protected].

Reminder about Cambridge Healthy Eating Guide
We have noticed a surge in students coming to school with soda, sugary drinks, candy and hot cocoa. Please help us support healthy eating by keeping sugary foods and drinks out of school. We will allow students to finish any breakfast they have brought to school in the cafeteria, but we will start taking until the end of the day foods and drinks that don’t meet district wellness guidelines. If this becomes a regular issue we will reach out to the family so we can problem solve together. Thank you for your partnership.
