magnolia blossom

Greetings from Julie Craven
Dear RAUC Families,

Magnolia and forsythia are blooming, daffodils and tulips are up, and we are in our home stretch. There are a number of dates in this newsletter for end of year events – a reminder of upcoming MCAS dates, spring concert information, and graduation and DC meeting dates for 8th grade families. Be sure to check them out and mark your calendar.

Please also mark your calendar for our first ever Celebration of Learning on Thursday, May 17. We have revised our culminating academic event (previously known as Night of Excellence) so that it is an opportunity to celebrate the learning of all students. Each student will have chosen a piece of work from each of their classes to share with family members; in keeping with our core values, they will also have a reflection on why they chose that work. Students have worked hard all year. We very much hope each family can make it to this important end-of-year event so we can reflect on and celebrate their learning together. We will have a community dinner before the event.

Also a reminder that progress reports went live on Aspen on Thursday before break and report cards were mailed home to families without Internet connection. Please call the school if you need help accessing your student’s report, 617.349.4060.

Best,

Julie Craven, Head of School

RAUC Office Update
Our awesome school clerk, Linette Maloney, will be on a leave of absence from April 30 - June 30. She will return, to the delight of staff and students alike! In the interim, we are grateful that Susan Jackson, one of our morning/lunch aides extraordinaire, is filling in for Linette. Students are already familiar with Ms. Susan, as she is known, and families will be too when they call the school. Linette is training Susan this week; thank you for your patience as Susan makes the transition into managing office affairs.

Volunteers Needed for Summer Reading Book Fair
On May 16-18, RAUC is thrilled to host our very own Summer Reading Book Fair for the first time! Our fair will be just for middle schoolers, featuring the books our students love. The goal is to prepare students for summer by making sure they have books they're excited to read.

We need your help to be as successful as possible. Can you spare a couple of hours to volunteer? Volunteer jobs include setting up the Fair, helping students find books, working the cash register, and packing the Fair away. If you've always dreamed of working in a bookstore, now's your chance! Please sign up for times here: http://bit.ly/2qPRc47.

Sam Musher, Library Technology Specialist, has posted a webpage with an FAQ about the fair: http://bit.ly/2HoSFbI. Please reach out to her if you have any further questions, [email protected].

RAUC Spring Concerts
This year we will have three separate concerts for our performing groups, instead of one long concert before our Celebration of Learning evening event as in previous years. A dedicated concert ensures that students have a chance to truly showcase their talents after a year of hard work. Performances will be in the auditorium. The concerts will be no longer than one hour; there is no dinner connected with the events. We apologize for conflicting messages you may have received about concert start times. These are the correct times!

What is Love? 8th Grade Health Update

Students discussed and learned what Love is and what Love isn't and identified multiple safe and comfortable ways to show love to your family, friends and dating partners. Healthy Fresh Food: Two Dollars a Bag
A parent in our school community wanted to make sure everyone knows about this wonderful program by Fair Foods (www.fairfoods.org). Here is how the website describes the program: Our signature program provides large bags of mixed fresh produce for a suggested donation of two dollars. We operate Two Dollars a Bag five days a week, distributing food at over twenty sites in churches, schools, and public housing and senior centers across Boston (see below for Cambridge site info). Each bag offers about twelve pounds of mixed fresh produce, ranging from potatoes and organic bananas to fresh spinach and mangoes. Our "dignity of a dollar" philosophy makes Two Dollars a Bag unique among hunger relief programs. Rather than supplying only emergency hunger relief or imposing income requirements to provide aid, we aim only to make your hard-earned dollars go further towards providing healthy weekly groceries. We have no eligibility requirements, no registration, and no ID checks. Take as many bags as you need for yourself, friends, or family. Come even if you don't have money; we have never turned anyone away.
