Greetings from Julie Craven
Dear RAUC Families,

As part of the district plan to support access for all students to high levels of achievement, the Math Department is making changes to the Upper School math program. Please read the attached letter for details on the changes, the rationale for them, and action steps to ensure success of the new approach. (The letter is in English and translated into Spanish, Haitian Creole, Arabic, French, and Amharic. Please reach out to us if you would like support in a language other than those listed.)

One component of the math plan is ensuring students receive the support they need in math, whether it is enrichment or additional instruction. To do that, we have added two 30 minute “Aim High” blocks into our schedule. Please know that the structure of the Aim High blocks is still being developed. We look forward to sharing more information with you at the start of next school year. Given that we have only so many hours in the school day, we have to take that time from somewhere. As a result, we will not have electives next year. We know that will disappoint some and will be of little notice to others. We have worked to create more visual and performing arts options for rising 7th and 8th graders as a way to continue to give students opportunities to explore their interests. We have also created a “Unity Day” schedule for Fridays to accommodate our quarterly community meetings or other occasional unity building events. For those of you with students at the high school, this is similar to CRLS Black and Silver schedules.

These two topics will be on the agenda of our next School Council so I can hear the Council’s perspectives on questions the changes raise and their ideas on ways to address them with families. Recently, some families have raised some questions about our cell phone policy so I will also review the decision-making process behind it with the Council as well as hear their thoughts on best ways to share that information with families. As with all meetings, community members are welcome to attend. This meeting will be a week earlier since I will be away on the 8th grade DC trip: Wednesday, May 30, 7:30-8:15AM in A201.

I hope to see you all at our Thursday Community Dinner (5:30PM in the caf) and Celebration of Learning (6-7PM in classrooms). Have a wonderful week!

Best,

Julie Craven, Head of School

HEALTH & WELLNESS TIP
Did you know? Helping out at home teaches children the importance of contributing to a team. It also allows them to feel valued and competent, both of which enhance self-esteem. Household chores such as doing laundry, washing and putting away dishes, vacuuming, and cleaning the bathroom, are all appropriate chores for adolescents. Reach out to Ms. Boadu ([email protected]) or Mr. McNulty ([email protected]) if you have any questions about a tip or concerns about your student’s social emotional well-being.
