RAUC newsletter header
  September 18, 2018
Greetings from Julie Craven
Dear RAUC Families,

Last week marked the reestablishment of one of my favorite parts of being a principal--getting into classes on a regular basis. In addition to simply enjoying watching students engage with interesting activities and grapple with new ideas or skills, I strive to see each teacher at least once a week in order to have a sense of classroom experiences. It is clear teachers are settling students into the learning routines that support them in aiming high.

Please find in this newsletter information on Back to School Night on Thursday, September 27. Also a reminder that it is an unusual week:  we have an early release day on Tuesday (students are dismissed at 12:55; buses follow the same routes) and no school on Wednesday. For those in our community celebrating Yom Kippur, may you have a good year!

Best,

Julie Craven, Head of School

Back to School Night:
Thursday, September 27 | 6-9PM

Please join us for Back to School Night, when we gather as a community that works together to support all our students. We hope to see all of you there! Students are welcome for dinner, then the gym will be open if they do not want to join you on the classroom visits. If you would like child care for younger siblings, please let Taraneh Ahmadi know by Friday, September 21 ([email protected] or 617.349.4060 x2041).

Goals for the evening:
–Build relationships and sense of community
–Strengthen school-family partnership by hearing from each family: What you need from the school; Your hopes and dreams for their students
–Make sure families leave the evening with a concrete way to support their student’s learning

Schedule for the night:
–6-6:30PM: Pasta and salad in the cafeteria--Connect with grade level families and staff; community partners will be there with information as well
–6:30-6:50PM: Whole community meeting in cafeteria
–7-8PM: Grade level meetings in classrooms

FREE Weekend Food for Your Child/Children!
WHAT: FREE weekend food for kids (Kosher, Halal, Nut-free, Vegetarian, etc.)
WHEN: Last school day before every weekend, during the school year (Oct to Jun)
WHY: Kids who eat regular, healthy meals do better in school and have better overall health!
REMEMBER: ANY child in RAUC is eligible BUT you have to sign up (see below)!

The Rindge Avenue Upper School (RAUC) participates in the Cambridge Weekend Backpack Program to offer a supply of nutritious meals and snacks for ANY child over the weekend, free of charge. Participant/family information is kept confidential and the staff discreetly distribute weekend bags on the last school day before the weekend. ANY child enrolled at RAUC is able to receive these weekly bags of food for them and their siblings. The program will begin in October and your child/children will receive a bag of food each week until the end of the school year or until you no longer wish to participate.

If you feel that your child/children would benefit from receiving additional food to meet their nutritional needs over the weekend, we encourage you to sign them up. Please send us your enrollment information by Friday, September 21st. Contact RAUC’s Family Partnership Coordinator, Taraneh Ahmadi ([email protected]) or RAUC’s Guidance Counselor Shanika Boadu ([email protected]) to enroll or for more information. If you’d like to assist in preparing the bags for the weekend, please contact Ellen van Bever at [email protected].

NEW FRENCH TEACHER STARTS OCTOBER 1
Please join us in welcoming Neil Pischner as RAUC’s new French teacher (and 8th grade Spanish section 4). Mr. Pischner has lived in both France and Latin America. His extensive resume includes teaching cultural enrichment courses such as Afro-Cuban percussion, salsa dance, Chinese calligraphy, and short film production. The World Language Department is working with him to support his transition to RAUC. Thank you to students and families for your patience with the unexpected vacancy we have been working to fill. We look forward to Mr. Pischner’s membership in our RAUC community.
