Greetings from Julie Craven!![Snowflakes Snowflakes](https://www.cpsd.us/UserFiles/Servers/Server_3042785/Image/newsletters/raus/snow.jpg)
Dear RAUC Families,
Winter is upon us! Perhaps not officially by the season, but certainly by the temperatures. Please stay warm, and please reach out to our Family Partnership Coordinator, Taraneh Ahmadi, if anyone in
your family is in need
of warm clothing ([email protected], or 617.349.4060 x2041).
Thank you to those who came in for our Fall Learning Partners conferences. We heard from 44% of you through our Family Engagement Survey, fairly equally distributed across grades, which is very helpful as we reflect on what we are doing well and where we can keep growing. Here is what you said about the conferences: They tend to meet your needs (92% agree/strongly agree) and teachers are able to provide feedback specific to your student (97% agree/strongly agree). We can continue to improve on providing ideas on how to support learning at home--while most of you (77%) agreed/strongly agreed that you left the conference with a specific idea, 21% responded neutrally.
We also asked about the degree to which you believe the school will communicate with you when the school has academic or social/emotional concerns, priority areas you named for us at Back to School Night. The responses indicate there is a generally high level of trust (people responded positively 84% and 77% of the time respectively). We can also continue to grow in this area, particularly in building family trust that we will reach out when we have social/emotional concerns (20% responded neutrally to this question). We recognize that trust is complex to build and will continue to reflect on how to strengthen it.
The one area where it is clear we have more work to do is in making sure families believe that we are challenging their student--20% of families do not agree that this is happening. We will keep working within the school and with the district to explore opportunities for challenge within the classroom and curriculum. It will also be interesting to find a way to ask students their thoughts on this question.
Thank you again for sharing your thoughts with us. We aim to be a school that supports each student in growing academically in a safe, supportive learning community. Your feedback helps us on our journey.
In partnership,
Julie Craven,
Head of School
7th Grade Visits NetPals Sites Tuesday, December 18
As event number two of the NetPals partnership, 7th graders will participate in site visits to their NetPal’s business site--Cambridge Systematics, GCP Applied Technologies, Oracle, or Vecna Technologies. See the 7th grade Science Learning Preview for more details. In case you have appointments scheduled, please note that students leave school at 11AM and return at approximately 1:30PM. They will eat at Bertucci’s with their NetPal, so they won’t miss lunch!

Charity Club Raises $200 for
Homeless Shelter
A dedicated group of 6th graders held their second successful bake sale last Wednesday (some of the group is pictured above). They have taken full responsibility for all the planning, advertising, baking and selling. Their next step is to identify the local shelter for their donation. They are truly living our RAUC core values!
RAUC Sweatshirts are Here (Wednesday)
Please send your student to the office to pick them up if they ordered one. We also ordered extras in all sizes--perfect gift for the holidays at $35 each. Just send your student in with cash or check made out to Rindge Ave Student Agency, and we will send them out with a sweatshirt!
Join Families of Rindge Ave Meeting Wednesday, December 12
Come meet with fellow RAUC families and plan upcoming events, including the January 18th dance, hosted this time by 6th grade families. The meeting starts at 6pm in the RAUC/Peabody library. Please reach out to FRAUC co-chairs Deirdre Logan or John O’Neil with questions ([email protected], [email protected]). You can attend the FRAUC meeting while your kids attend the O’Neill Library Kids’ Book club happening at the same time (details below).
O’Neill Library Kids’ Book Club THIS Wednesday
Save the date for an evening Book Club for kids 11 years and up. ‘Books and Bites’ will take place this Wednesday December 12, from 6-7PM at the O'Neill Branch (same time as the FRAUC meeting for parents). Join them for great conversation about books and what's going on in the world. Food provided! Pick up a copy of the book (Cosmic by Frank Cottrell Boyce) beforehand at the O'Neill library.

RAUC Students Vote on City Budget
Last week, every RAUC social studies class voted on projects to benefit the City of Cambridge via the city's Participatory Budgeting program. Students became informed voters by teaching each other about some of the proposed projects, including health & safety gear for firefighters, solar panels for Russell Youth Center, and more trees for a cooler and cleaner environment. Since all Cambridge residents 6th grade and older can vote, our students were excited about the opportunity to have a real say in their local government!
