RAUC newsletter header
  March 19, 2019
Greetings from Julie Craven
Dear RAUC Families,

I’m writing with a personal request to please complete the Cambridge Public Schools Family survey. You should have received a notification from the district about this online survey to hear how families are experiencing school.

While it is a district survey, it matters a lot to us. We get to look at the responses from RAUC families so we can gauge how we are doing. The beauty of this survey is that we can break the responses down in a range of ways- we can see what 8th grade families say versus 6th grade, for example, or what families from different cultural, language, or economic groups say, so we can really dig deeper into our strengths and areas for growth. Please know it is completely anonymous!

However, we need high participation to make this data meaningful. We also are hoping for proportional participation. In other words we want to hear from ALL of you so we know we are making decisions based on what most families are telling us as opposed to a few voices. It is longer than the RAUC family survey that we ask people to complete at conferences, but it shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes.

Please note: if you completed a paper survey at the Learning Partners Conferences, you are all set – it’s the same survey. You already gave us your feedback and we appreciate you! Everyone else can find the link to the survey here. We also have paper copies at school if you prefer. For those receiving the newsletter via mail, we have included a paper survey. (Please ignore the “sample” stamped on the pages – long story, but this is the real deal!) You can either mail it to the school or you or your student can drop it off in the office. You can also reach out to Taraneh Ahmadi, Family Partnership Coordinator ([email protected]; 617.349.4060 x2041) if you have any questions, or just drop by the school and any of us can help you.

Thank you for helping us really hear from you so we can be the best school we can for all families.

In partnership,
Julie Craven, Head of School

Spring Dance Next Friday (3/29)
danceThe last RAUC dance of the year will be sponsored by families of Grade 8 students. The dance is held from 6-8 PM in the school cafeteria and is open only to the RAUC community. 7th Grade to Harvard on March 29
On Friday March 29th seventh graders at RAUC will be visiting Harvard University for the day. Project Teach is a program run by Harvard’s Official College and Career Awareness Program and takes our students on an introductory college experience including a real class, Q and A session with Harvard students, lunch in the First Year Dining Hall, and a tour of the campus. This is a great opportunity for our students to start to develop a college going identity and Harvard research has shown that our students are the precise age for beginning an educational roadmap that can lead to a college going experience. Should be an exciting day. Lunch and transportation provided. Permission slips have been handed out in advisory. Please sign permission slip and media release form and return as soon as possible or by Friday, March 22. Students will leave first thing in the morning so it is important that they are in school on time. Please mark your calendars!

Social Media
RAUC Speaker Series Next Friday (3/29):
Smartphones and Social Media: Hear the Real Deal, from Students Themselves

This series that we developed specifically for our RAUC families, is on to its 3rd event! If you are not scheduled to help out at the dance, please come join us. Even if you are scheduled to help, swing by when you get a chance. Parents from other schools are invited too! What is the talk really about? This event is a chance to hear from current high school students about the good and the bad of digital life in middle school. What rules did their families set about phone use? Do they think those rules should have been different, and why? What do they wish the adults in their lives had understood about technology? With only a couple of years' distance from middle school, these students are in the best position to help us understand what our students are going through and how we can support them. Come with questions! Bring a dish to share and enjoy a potluck dinner with other parents while conversing with our young and dynamic panel. Running from 6-8PM in Room 211 (6th grade math). View the flyer here.
