Greetings from Julie Craven

Dear RAUC Families,

Happy first full week of school. We begin our regular schedule after last week’s welcome back activities. Friday was our culmination with a Whole School Community Meeting. Volunteers from each grade level shared their identity work and the staff had a lot of fun singing our version of Old Town Road, aka Second Floor, courtesy of the lyric-writing talents of orchestra teacher Brittany Phillips. Check out the video at our RAUC Facebook page

Our hope is that this first week of community building supports academic success -- the more comfortable students feel with their peers and teachers, the more willing they are to take the academic risks necessary to learning. Ask your student what their favorite part of the week was.

This week students follow their regular schedule. We encourage you to use the learning previews for your student’s grade to help you engage in conversations about classes with your student. Students do better in school when they see their families and school are connected.

Here’s to a year of strong home-school partnership in support of each student’s success!

Julie Craven,
Head of School

IMPORTANT: New Date for Back to School Night is Thursday, September 26 from 6-8PM

Due to a miscommunication on a district calendar, the date we had originally chosen was inadvertently in conflict with the CRLS Back to School Night. We are pushing our date back a week so that families with students at both schools are able to attend both events! Thank you to families who brought this to our attention. Please adjust your calendars accordingly! Next week’s newsletter will provide more information about the event. Thanks to all for your flexibility!

Weekend Backpack Program

Rindge Avenue Upper School (RAUC) participates in the Food for Free Cambridge Weekend Backpack Program to offer a supply of nutritious meals and snacks for ANY child over the weekend, free of charge. Participant/family information is kept confidential and the staff discreetly distribute weekend bags on the last school day before the weekend. ANY child enrolled at RAUC is able to receive these weekly bags of food for them and their siblings. The program will begin in October and your child/children will receive a bag of food each week until the end of the school year or until you no longer wish to participate. If you feel that your child/children would benefit from receiving additional food to meet their nutritional needs over the weekend, we encourage you to sign them up. Enrollment forms will be emailed to families this week. Hard copies will also be available at Back to School Night. Please send us your enrollment information by Friday, September 27th. Contact RAUC’s Family Partnership Coordinator, Taraneh Ahmadi ([email protected] or 617.349.4060 x2041) or RAUC’s Guidance Counselor Shanika Boadu ([email protected]) to enroll or for more information. If you’d like to assist in preparing the bags for the weekend, please contact Ellen van Bever at [email protected].

RAUC Policies for Absences, Appointments, and Dismissals

When students enter the RAUC building, they are the responsibility of the school administration and this role is not taken lightly. To report an absence, please call the main office at 617.349.4060. If a student has an appointment during the school day, the office would appreciate some advance notice so the student can be brought to the office in time and released to their guardian/parent. For safety reasons students are not allowed to leave the school building on their own. Families can in writing or email release their student to a responsible adult.

Crossing Guard Issues

The Cambridge Police Department would like to assure families that the lack of crossing guards around schools is an important issue that they are working to address. As the department works to address its staffing issues, parents’ concerns about supervision at busy intersections such as Walden at Richdale, are being considered and could potentially lead to additional supervisors at these locations. Please let us know about any concerns you have in this regard and we will communicate them accordingly.
