Greetings from Julie Craven

Dear RAUC Families,

There have been a lot of wonderful things happening in our community--an amazing Unity Concert last Thursday that helped us launch into Black History Month uplifted, RAUC students shining at a Science Olympiad this Saturday, and the start of Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action in advisories.  I am so grateful for all the ways that our community--students, teachers, families, and outside partners, come together to help us provide rich opportunities for students in an inclusive environment. Please make sure to check out the newsletter for more details on all of these events. There is also information on more ways for your and your student to continue to be part of conversations that help us keep growing as an inclusive, compassionate learning institution where all students thrive.

In gratitude for your partnership,

Julie Craven, Head of School

Core Values Shone at Friday's Unity Concert!

What a night. The commUnity dinner was buzzingly cheerful--folks brought in food that represented their culture or family and that added a wonderful element of curiosity, sharing and pride. And the performance in the gym was out of this world. Our students took it to the next level in front of a packed house. They were poised, showcased their amazing talents, and were wonderfully supportive of each other. The final combined performance of all ensembles (band, chorus, orchestra, ukulele) led to a rousing standing ovation. Talk about Unity and Aiming High! So grateful to our amazing teachers--Brittany Phillips, Jamal Fairbanks, Josh DeWitte, and Patrick Wroge. They had a vision and supported our students in realizing it. We also appreciate you families who support student performers at home and then showed up with your enthusiasm and warmth. RAUC stars all around!

RAUC Welcomes CRLS Intern in Educator of Color Pathway Program

One barrier to equity that came out of the district’s Building Equity Bridges project is that there are not enough teachers who look like the students they teach. Only 2% of educators in Massachusetts are African-American, 2% are Latinx and less than 2% are Asian and Native American combined. One of the ways to rectify and change this reality is to recruit young people of color and other underrepresented groups in education who are interested in careers in schools that serve their own communities. This is the inspiration behind the creation this year of an Educator of Color Pathway program at CRLS. Students in the pathway program first study the history of public education in America. Then, under the supervision of a CRLS teacher, the intern observes and then leads some individual lessons in a mentor classroom. RAUC is excited to partner with CRLS educators in this concrete action step. This year, Gisel Saillant will be hosting an intern in her 6th grade social studies classroom. We look forward to building this pathway.

Social-Emotional Tip of the Week

Don’t forget to encourage your student to speak with Ms. Boadu, the school guidance counselor if they are feeling stressed, worried, or feel like they could use some additional support during the school day. Ms. Boadu can also be a great support to you in understanding and reaching out to your adolescent.

If you have any stories of how you have used one of our SEL tips with your own child, please share them with Maggie MacLennan, Ms. Boadu’s intern, at [email protected]!

Black Lives Matter at School -
Week of Action

blm photosThis week, RAUC is proud to join schools across the country in Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action, a week that kicks off Black History Month. We believe that our school is a place for building equity, understanding, and for the active engagement in creating pathways to freedom and justice for all people. Participating in this week of action is a way to move us towards these goals. We are grateful for teaching interns Ryann Dear and Bobbye Hampton who helped develop the advisory lessons that students at all grades will engage in this week.

Please see the attached letter for more details, including the goals of the week and some more explanations and resources.

RAUC Scientists Shone this Weekend

Congratulations to the first ever RAUC Science Olympiad team who competed February 2nd at the prestigious Harvard University Science Olympics. The team of ten students represented RAUC proudly in many events such as Mousetrap Cars, Ping Pong Parachute, Experimental Design and many others. Two of our students cracked the top ten in their design and successful launch of a Ping Pong Parachute, congrats to Jenny Chen and Fatima Mirghani who received much praise for their effort at the event. A day of science fun was had by all team members who expressed their happiness about representing our school in the area of SCIENCE! at Harvard. Great job scholars. And huge shout out to 7th grade science teacher Jay Mahoney for bringing this opportunity to our students.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

8th Grade Field Trip to CRLS
On Tuesday, February 11, the 8th Graders at RAUC have the amazing opportunity to experience a unit in our curriculum come to life! We will travel to the high school for a performance of the “Nine Who Dared.” The play is the story of the high school students, the Little Rock Nine, who were at the forefront of school desegregation in the 1950’s. Ask your 8th grader for the permission slip (or see here). The school will provide buses and students will be at school in time for lunch.

Inviting All Students! Help Shape Cambridge History Curriculum
New history frameworks were adopted in 2018 and curriculum changes have been in the works for years. Last year, a major shift was made to 8th grade creating a civics course. Many 8th grade students from across the district participated in meetings to voice their opinion about what should be in the curriculum. To continue that productive conversation, the History and Social Studies Department in conjunction with interested students in grades 5-12, will be forming a council to help discuss and advise on issues of curriculum in CPS. The information session will be Wednesday, March 4th at CRLS Library at 3:30. If you can't make that, there will be other ways to participate!
