Greetings from Julie Craven
Dear RAUC Families,
Happy March! It is a month of celebrations. All this week students are making morning greetings in a range of languages over the loudspeaker as part of World Language week. Advisories will engage in activities throughout the month connected to Womens History Month, and on some Tuesday and Friday mornings we are hoping to have pop up music performances in the lobby or hall as part of Music in Schools month. There is more information on these celebrations later in the newsletter.
Around school you can also see public service announcements (PSAs) related to the coronavirus. Students made these as part of a mini-unit in 7th grade social studies. The goal was to share information on the virus and also to combat anti-Asian and anti-Chinese comments and sentiments that have arisen as a result of lack of understanding about the virus and how it is spread. You can check out a few of them here: http://bit.ly/3apyKDO! Shout out to Beatriz Thomas and all her 7th graders for reminding us that we need to aim high for a commUnity that is respectful of everyone.
Have a wonderful week!
Julie Craven, Head of School
Reminder: TONIGHT (March 3) is the First of Three Courageous Conversations
Families, teachers, staff, and community of the Baldwin, Peabody, RAUC triad are invited to explore together questions such as:

Disrupting barriers to racial equity starts with each of us, setting out on a long, shared journey. Let’s walk together. (Facilitated by Melody Brazo and Melinda Barbosa).

World Language Week March 2-6
This week we are celebrating World Language Week, which was founded in 1957 to help students across the nation understand the importance of studying world languages. Each day of the week, student volunteers will say a morning greeting in the language of their choice, and the advisory groups will try to guess the language. Students will also collaborate to create a word cloud poster with the RAUC core values translated into as many languages as possible. Throughout the day, students will wear badges that show the individual's linguistic heritage. Shout out to our World Language teachers Neil Pischner and Nick Paras, as well as the district instructional coach Angela Green, for their work to bring this celebration together. Ask your student what languages they heard so far this week!
Social-Emotional Tip of the Week
Make consistent attempts to model the behavior you desire from your student. That could mean apologizing when you are in the wrong, or showing others the respect and kindness you expect of your student. Adolescents can learn a lot about relationships from observing the behavior of their caretakers.
If you have any stories of how you have used one of our SEL tips with your own child, please share them with Maggie MacLennan, Ms. Boadu’s intern, at [email protected]!
March is National Women's History Month
At RAUC, students will engage in collaborative conversations during Advisory to explore a number of issues related to Women’s History Month. Our overarching goal is to continue to build critical thinking skills and raise awareness of important social issues. Students will continue to practice communication and collaboration skills through a variety of peer discussions. While these activities will not happen every day, we hope that by the end of the month students will have had some rich conversations and learned some interesting things!
Specific goals and topics:
–Understand the purpose of Women’s History Month
–Build an understanding of the pivotal moments for women’s rights.
–Consider and argue the current state of women’s equality.
–Explore contributions to gender equality through women in sports.
Music In Our Schools Month
The month of March is Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM) across the nation. The purpose of MIOSM is to highlight the benefits of music education, and to remind us of how important it is for all students to have access to music. To celebrate our RAUC music programs and musicians, all RAUC students are invited to sign up for a morning music slot on Tuesday and Friday mornings throughout the month of March to serenade their school community as they enter the building in the morning. Students should see their music teacher ASAP for sign up information.
6th Grade Filming - Mr. Tobin, Ms. Gribben and Several Students to Be Featured in Instructional Resources for Teachers
On March 4th and 5th, Heinemann Publishing in Portsmouth, New Hampshire will be at RAUC to feature some 6th grade students and our literacy coach Katie Gribben along with 6th grade ELA teacher Dan Tobin for several video lessons aimed at helping teachers across the country. Mr. Tobin, Ms. Gribben and the students will be videotaped as part of the Fountas and Pinnell Literacy project, “Fountas and Pinnell Classroom”. Those lessons will be part of a group of online video resources for teachers across the country using Fountas and Pinnell’s Classroom system. This is an honor and a very exciting opportunity for our school!

Happy National Nutrition Month!
Did you know that students who eat breakfast may see increases in their concentration and test scores? Students who regularly eat breakfast also have fewer behavioral issues in the classroom and fewer tardy days. Cambridge schools offer FREE complete breakfast (i.e., a hot meal, fruit and milk) to all students. Maybe it’s time your family gave it a try? Find school menus here >>
Last Day of School
