RAUC Musical Update
The RAUC musical rehearsals are underway and the cast is diving into Willy Wonka and his famous chocolate factory. Students are exploring the story through music and character development. Using dramaturgy, they are also exploring the history of the story. The musical version we are working on is an adaptation of the original 1971 movie and book created for a modern retelling on stage. The message at the heart of this story is to be kind. Willy Wonka sets out to test the children by putting temptations in front of them in order to find a genuine, honest child. One element of the story that has had a crucial transformation are the portrayal of the Oompa Loompas. In the original 1964 edition of the book the Oompa Loompas were from an African nation. Dahl faced criticism for the racist way they were depicted in the book and in 1973 with urging of the NAACP, rewrote them to be a made-up group of people who were being persecuted for being themselves in Loompaland. In our version, the Oompa Loompas are the heart of the chocolate factory and act as inventors, engineers, food scientists and chocolate makers who are free to be their true selves. The cast is excited to dive even further into the world of Willy Wonka, and we will keep you updated as we get closer to the performance!
