Equity Update

Equity boardWe care about building an inclusive community. That IS part of our on-going equity work. Here are some ways we are doing this:

Improving our Unity Concert
This is the first time ever that ALL students in the entire school have an active role in the unity concert. This was an intentional decision based on feedback from families and staff from our last live concert before the pandemic.

  • In previous years, we built unity by having the ensembles play together. We also noticed that music studio students were left out. “How is that unity,” we wondered.
  • Even though we offer music studio as a non-performing music option for students who might not want to perform, we still thought we could do better.

Unity ConcertSo we changed it! This year, music studio students are part of the concert in a way that is most comfortable for them.

  • Some composed original pieces that will be played at the concert.
  • Others designed the beautiful posters around our school to advertise it (see photo on right!).

These non-performing roles are essential to make a concert happen! Now everyone is a part of the concert.

Lifting up student voices
We have been intentional in inviting students from historically underrepresented or marginalized communities to sit on interview committees for our music teachers. We continue to prioritize having educators who are representative of our student population. Inviting these students on our committees empowers them to help us meet this goal.

Lifting up family voices
Family VoicesWe know that all our families have so much to contribute and share. At the end of May, we will be hosting a series of community potlucks / listening sessions. While we will focus on hearing from the following families, all are welcome to join and listen:

  • Tuesday, May 24, 6:30-8PM - Ethiopian families
  • Wednesday, May 25, 6:30-8PM - Muslim families
  • Thursday, May 26, 6:30-8PM - Families of color (BIPOC)
