Good morning CPS Community:

We are pleased to announce that last night the School Committee appointed Cambridge Public Schools Chief Operating Officer David Murphy as interim Superintendent effective July 1, 2024. Mr. Murphy brings over a decade of education leadership experience.

Mr. Murphy joined CPS in January 2023 as Chief Operating Officer. He currently oversees several key operational departments and serves as the liaison for capital improvement projects and other matters between the district and municipal government of Cambridge.

Mr. Murphy came to CPS from the Medford Public Schools where he served as the Assistant Superintendent of Finance & Operations. He previously served in several leadership positions with the Boston Public Schools, including Chief of Staff, Deputy Superintendent, and Labor Counsel. He is also a former Chairperson of the Attleboro School Committee, worked as outside legal counsel to several Massachusetts school districts, and served as Strategic Planning Advisor to the Superintendent of Lowell Public Schools.

Mr. Murphy earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Fordham University and his law degree from Boston College Law School.

The School Committee says they “look forward to working collaboratively with Mr. Murphy in the weeks and months ahead”, as they “conduct a thoughtful and thorough search for a permanent, long-term Superintendent.” Mr. Murphy says he is honored to serve as interim superintendent and is deeply committed to continuing to advance the district’s mission. He looks forward to working collaboratively with the School Committee, educators, families, and community partners to advance the interests of all CPS students.

Sincerely,
The CPS Team
